Review – Policy

On my channels, I review both games that I have acquired myself and sample copies from cooperating publishers and authors.

It is therefore important for me to explain my approach in a transparent way.

Reviews

  • Board games are usually presented in three places: On arrival through a spontaneous unboxing in the livestream, a live review at ‘Pile ist geil’ together with other games on Twitch and as a recording of the review as a single video on YouTube.
  • The individual video also appears with a ‘Geekcheck’ rating on the website and on Boardgamegeek.
  • The Geekcheck takes into account values from 1-10 and the overall average (comparable to the BGG rating) of the following categories:
    • Artwork
    • Mechanic
    • Theme
    • Fun
    • Quality
  • A game with a rating of at least 8.0 is considered an outstanding recommendation.
  • Every new video will be announced on my social media channels and the Discord Community Server.
  • Every game I play is reviewed by me – but there is no guarantee that a game will be reviewed well.
  • My reviews are usually first impressions of only a few rounds. Therefore, legacy or campaign games are not my focus.

Review Copies

  • Please do not send any unsolicited review copies.
  • It might not be possible for me to complete a review within a specific time frame. If it requires a dedicated timeline, this will need to be agreed on a case-by-case basis.
  • I will highlight prominently in videos and streams when I have received a review copy of a game.
  • Older games are just as interesting for me and my audience as new releases. However, I do not review prototypes or early draft versions or print-and-play games.
  • Game material and instructions should have been published in German or English.
  • I generally do not ask for any additional payment for a review. However, I do sometimes charge an advertising fee to increase the reach of a video through paid advertising.
  • For special formats, shows and presentations other than reviews, fees will be charged depending on the work involved and will be negotiated with the client.
  • I am not interested in discounted review copies. I invest my time and passion and therefore expect partners to support me and my work as well – at least by providing a free review copy.

Kickstarter Previews

I rarely back board games on Kickstarter and have no intention of changing this attitude. I have some fundamental issues with the way Kickstarter has become a way for larger publishers to shift the risk of the business to the buyer. Likewise, ‘previews’ aren’t honest reviews but part of the paid advertising and promotion campaign and channels that do such presentations lose a huge amount of reputation and credibility. I’m obviously not a channel that needs to focus primarily on the latest and hottest board games.

However, I am interested in playing great games, featuring small idealists with charming promotions – and I create content and talks about crowdfunded games based on these particular aspects in the community.

If you think this applies to you or your game, then get in touch with me: basti@geekpunkt.de

Other Formats

In other formats I feature accessories and gadgets for board games, as well as stuff for geeks and nerds. I’m always happy to test and present exciting items to my community. There are many different ways to work together. I particularly enjoy tailoring content perfectly to your needs. I am happy to receive your enquiry for collaboration: basti@geekpunkt.de
